6th Maritime Regt R.A.

HISTORY

I have not found a lot of info on the internet but I did find these links.

Although the 6th Maritime Regt R.A. was not a member of the local T.A. army units, the 266th Para [GVA] Bty R.A. [v] Bristol. had the stewardship of the wooden memorial for many years. it is now in the care of Mr Adrian Rose [ex S/sgt] of Thornbury, S/ Glous, nr Bristol.

Marlwood School, Vattingstone Lane, Thornbury, South Glos. Nr Bristol.

The 1939 war brought a new challenge. The school had lived through a number of wars, both civil and international, but World War II brought the dangers of warfare right onto the doorstep, and pupil safety was a prime consideration. Under the sheltering lip of the quarry, a sandbagged shelter was built, and at the first whine of the siren, pupils and teachers, with gas masks trailing, evacuated the building with military precision. The air raid warning was not always unwelcome. The remote possibility of being hit by a bomb was a small price to pay for escaping from a difficult exam, and, fortunately although there were a number of alerts, the school remained undamaged. Troops temporarily based in the area found the school a friendly host, and football matches were arranged between the soldiers and the school team. At the end of the war, the Maritime Regiment of the R.A. gave a Maritime gun in appreciation of the happy relationship which had existed with the school during the years 1941 — 1945.

The majority of the servicemen we served were members of the Maritime Regiment, all volunteers, who manned the guns on the merchant ships after they were armed in the second or third year of the war. These volunteers were posted mainly on to the Arctic convoys to Archangel and Murmansk, highly dangerous missions. See http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stories/26/a5325626.shtml

From the beginning of the war I worked at the Food Office (Ministry of Food). The Food Executive Officer was Reg Millard, who was also a Councillor and public figure. I was seventeen and acted as secretary See http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stories/59/a5285559.shtml

Mr Biddel of Thornbury Grammar School. [ ref page 4]

Back in 1962 he was reported in the “Thornbury Gadget (and Patchway Quilt )”. Here under an article headed “Camograph MDCVI” we learnt a little about his illustrious past. Did you know that he was a member of the 6th. Maritime Artillery? That for many years he was a special constable? Or that for 25 years he was a first class referee in local league football? All this besides having had an outstanding playing career in cricket and football.

I was called up on the 23rd October 1941 to Buxton for six weeks training. We were based in the old hospital there.
