Formation of the Gloucestershire Volunteer Artillery.
On the 22nd November, 1859. the then Secretary of State for War; Sidney Herbert,1st Baron Herbert of Lea,
gave permission to the Lord - Lieutenant of Gloucestershire [The Earl of Ducie] and the Lord Mayor of Bristol James Poole
for the 1st Gloucestershire Volunteer Artillery to be formed.
Major Henry Bourchier Osborne Savile, [late] R.A.
was Gazetted Major - Commandant of the 1st Gloucestershire Volunteer Artillery on the 21st. December, 1859.

Notes. 7 Flame Grenade worn on the collar below the Queens Crown [Victoria] Note also the Busby with silver Grenade and white Cockade.
The Sabertache is made of black patent leather with silver Royal Coat of Arms surmounted with a Gun.
He also would also wear a pouch on his left shoulder blade attached to the shoulder strap.
The officers of the first four batteries to be formed were as follows

*Sholto Vere Hare became Lord Mayor in 1862. *E. Gore Langton was the son of a former Mayor.
